2007-2008 Player of the Week

Jun.8th 2008 Smith Field

 VS. Southampton FC (1-3 L)

This week’s player of the week has to go to two players who busted their gut on a uncomfortable Sunday morning. They have been hard workers all season and really put forth the playoff effort that was needed to honor them with this award. Making an impact at forward position for the last few weeks, Paul Kitson made a mark when he scored the only Wildcats goal in the 3-1 loss to Southampton. He continued to fight through the rest of the game to get whatever offensive chances were available.
The award is to be shared with defender Rob DePiero as he continued to fight regardless of the final outcome. He was vocal, stood his ground, and even though hot under the collar at times with colorful language flying, he stayed composed enough to finish the game with poise and a great effort. Kitson is a third time recipient and this is DePiero’s first. Congrats to everyone who made Player of the Week this season!

Jun.1st 2008 Ramsey High School

 VS. Sportfriends SC (4-1 W)

The third player this season to walk off the pitch with a Hatrick, Paul Kitson takes away the "player of the week award". The second time recipient of the award had everything going for him this sunny Sunday, speed, agility and most importantly 3 goals boosting him up the stats chart. He showed no mercy to his opposition scoring goal after goal after goal making one better than the other.
Let's hope Number 9 still has plenty of fire left in him to guide WFC right into a well deserved play-off spot.
KEEP THEM COMING PAULIE!

May.11th 2008 Veterans Memorial Field

 VS. Lake Parsippany (6-3 W)

He single handedly took a part Lake Parsippany's defense resulting in a great Hatrick, that's the reason this week's award is handed to Clay Smith. This is Smith's second time receiving this award. No matter how many times the opponents tried to take his legs out he got up every single time showing that they will need a little more than that to stop him this Sunday. Clay has showed the entire team that when he's there to play he means business, this year he has put away many game deciding goals to help WFC be at the top of the tables.

Apr.20th 2008 Ramsey High School

 VS. RD Benders (8-1 W)

This week’s player of the week is a first time recipient to the trophy. A tough decision with all the scoring and another outstanding display of defense. One of the guys who shows up week after week with no complaints, he would have his day to shine. Without hesitation Simon Burgess stepped up to a corner kick in the 1st half only to find it suspending for a short while until it met Brinkofski’s head and flew into the net for a brilliant goal. It’s fair to say everyone just stood there in a little bit of amazement.  But Burgess wouldn’t call it quits as he scored a one timer  late in the 2nd half– but was called off sides. As if given a 2nd chance to the unfair dismissal of his 1st goal for the year, a pk was called and everyone looked to Simon for the chance to redeem his goal. He would finish, and end the game with two assists and a goal. Needless to say he had a smile from ear to ear!

Apr.13th 2008 Smith Field

 VS. Startime (1-0 W)

To have a GREAT WIN you must start with a GREAT DEFENSE!! What we witnessed this Sunday was the best defensive domination we've seen all season. That's why we have to name WFC defense as this week's player of week! Though Clay walked away with the game winning goal, these four warriors: James Polles, Mike Cobb, Lorenzo Rifino and Nate Lockard single handedly shut down all of Startime's striking power from start to finish. For the entire game they kept a cool mind set knowing that they wouldn't have any subs in their favor, due to the fact they were the only defenders available at the game. At the scariest scoring moment, Startime had an indirect kick within the 18 yard box and still couldn’t punish the club. Lockard ran down every run, Rifino telegraphed and stepped ahead of his man to break the play, Cobb used his body as a weapon of defense, and Polles kept them all in sync dominating little chance for shots on net.

Apr.6th 2008 Smith Field

 VS. Ramsey Rangers (3-2 W)

The Key Word in Sunday's victory was HEART! That's why this week's player of the week is awarded to the entire Wildcats Futbol Club! Although going down by 2 goals in the second half, the Cats showed that their undefeated season wasn't ending today, every single individual showed a great amount of heart and determination to turn the game around, we came together as hungry Lions and by far put away the best tasting victory of the season. Outstanding plays were seen throughout the entire match, great communication from keeper Quattrocchi, flawless defensive tackles by the DePiero brothers, Rifino, Calderon, Lockard and Cobb, precision passes from our midfielders Henry, Greenberg, DaSilva, Burgess, Pagano, Stokes (aka S. Gerard), McComiskie and Brinkofski and superb finishing from our attackers Hollens, Salge and Kitson. To mention also some great coaching by Don Peterfriend making the Hollens stopper move which paid off with the equalizing goal.
All in all another Sunday with another W which holds WFC in first place in the division! GREAT JOB FELLAS!

Mar.30th 2008 Veterans Memorial Field

 VS. Lake Parsippany (2-1 W)

If you blinked then you may have missed it. The winning goal comes from this week’s player of the week. Take your pick of words to describe it, stunning, sizzling, brilliant, …Tim Greenberg let ‘er rip to put players on both sides of the ball in awe! The goal gave the edge over Lake Parsippany in a 2-1 victory late in the 2nd half. You could tell something was brewing from Tim’s hard work all game, and lucky for us it was a goal. The club unfortunately missed contribution from Greenberg in the fall as he was sidelined with a hamstring pull. But the winter gave Tim the time to heal. If there is any indication of his leg not working properly, you wouldn’t have known it as the shot was fired and instantly struck the back netting. Welcome back Tim and fire away!!

Nov.24th 2007 Brookdale Park

 VS. Real Kappa Wyckoff2 (6-5 W)

When he rolls up to the game with his fearless dog wearing a pimp leopard print jacket, you know it's serious. Chris Salge is named this week's "player of the week" as he not only worked for his first hat trick as a Wildcat, but also put away the game winner. After a few weeks of forgetting that you're supposed to shoot inside the white bars and not over them, Salge was able to bury one after another. Not only was he scoring goals, he was assisting them too. Salge walked away with 2 assists, 3 goals, and was practically involved in one way or another to the 6 goals. Some might even call it clutch?! Even better was his celebration when he hugged fellow Midland Park alumni (Brinkofski) and fell to the ground. Brink looked afraid to support the ecstatic Salge, so he just kind of moved out of the way and tossed him to the ground. You know Trisha couldn't wait for the car ride home to recap all of his mesmerizing goals and perfect passes! King of the stats, Salge is leading the boards with 23 points as the fall is coming to an end.

Nov.18th 2007 Wayne Hills HS

VS. Haledon LSC (2-1 W)

This "player of the week" made sure he brought his "speed to the game". Joining only a year ago, Mike DaSilva has proven to be a WFC asset in 2007. In an all important game, DaSilva ended with the 1st goal and aided Kitson's game winner with the non-stop attack on the Haledon defense. As DaSilva becomes more and more comfortable with the team and to those players around him, his talent continues to develop. Even so comfortable that he doesn't mind wearing a clown suite to warm-up in. Mike is a guy full of hard work and it rubs off on those around him. Known to be one of, if not the fastest players on the team, we also wonder if he subconsciously incorporates some Ju Jitsu technique into his game when he falls. Most would agree it appears instead of falling and staying on the ground, he usually bounces up and finds his way back to his feet to continue running down the field! No one has seen anything quite like it. If you listen for it, sometimes you can even hear coach call him Maicon! It was heard after the game by a few guys for his nomination, and DaSilva could be seen smiling like a teenage boy in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival!

Nov.11th 2007 G. Washington Middle School

VS. Sportfriends (2-2 D)

This week's player of the week goes to an attributed veteran to the Wildcats club.  You know he's around if you smell icy hot, or the stench of banana at half time. Still making it to the games with a 7 month pregnant wife, Nick Stokes continues to support his club. Although he doesn't have the money and stardom of Chris Martin (lead singer of Coldplay), he was on a stage of his own this week as he single handedly brought the Wildcats back to life from a first half deficit. Stokes had taken two direct kicks from outside the 18, and buried both into the back of the net.  The 2nd goal was deja vu since the shot was taken from around the same area, once again finding its way to the back netting. Stokes was sure to let his wife know that they were two of the most brilliant goals he's ever scored! She must have GPS satellite tracking him down because she called the second the game was over. Not really sure why, but it appeared Stokes decided to clean the mud from his cleats with the WFC new sparkling white jersey.  Maybe he didn't want to get the Liverpool-mobile dirty?! We hope he can bring us more goals before Stokes jr. pops out...

Nov.4th 2007 Smith Field

VS. Brownstone SC (4-0 W)

For a guy who has been so keen on coming to the football games this fall, it's the first time a WFC player is awarded the "player of the week" award for a consecutive time. Unfortunately it also appears this upcoming weekend may be McComisikie's last run with the WFC, as he will be heading back to Scotland soon. Graham showed up with his best appearance on Sunday's Round 1 State match up vs. Brownstone SC, as he ended the game netting two great goals. The 2nd of the two was a one timer he blasted on the ground dead at the goalie, who ended up losing it between his legs! As anyone can see, McComisikie has been gaining ground from match to match and proving himself as an asset on the pitch. He's often found making moves that cause defenders trousers to drop. Hope We nivver dee'd o winter yit!

Nov.1st 2007 Jannarome Park

VS. Haledon LSC (1-1 D)

This player is not known for "aye reddin the fire", probably does not live by the phrase "gae ti bed wi the lamb an rise wi the laverock", but he will guid ti hae his cog out whan it rains kail. Though he may not be quite as pretty looking as Pagano, Graham McComiskie is this week's player of the week. If you haven't noticed, Graham has been making great contribution to the midfield from week to week. His vision has led to some creative passes for those running off the ball and last night he used every opportunity to work hard for the ball. In this make up game verse Haledon, he showed his calm under pressure, as he was constantly being hacked every time he touched the ball. Some of us might of heard him swearing at the guy chopping his ankle, but couldn't quite understand what it was....It's too bad we may have to lose our player to the shores of Scotland in a few weeks. Overall this game was hard to pick the player for the award, but Graham is the stang o the trump.

Oct.28th 2007 Smith Field

 VS. Emeralds (4-0 W)

Even though he had to overcome the Yankees being thrown out again in the post season, this week's "Player of the Week" not only had a great game Sunday, but didn't stop his intensity after his first goal.  You know when Chris Salge scores on a header, ... it's going to be a good day. While he might be one of the smallest in height, he may be classified as one of the biggest in heart. Anyone on the field could tell he wasn't just going to settle for one goal against the Emeralds, he wanted more, and it made the players around him work just as hard. He then proved he could finish another opportunity after the 2nd goal went in. Obviously, with the game winning goal in the first half, Chris was nothing but positive throughout the whole game. A lot of players contributed, but this originating Wildcats veteran takes the trophy. "Salge" is now on a two game scoring streak, with 1 against the Benders and 2 against the Emeralds. Let's hope the Hatrick comes against Brownstone!!

Oct.14th 2007 Westbrook Middle School

 VS. RD Benders (3-2 W)

It was tough deciding who this week's winner was, since the rights were battled between two veterans: Anthony Pagano and Chris Salge. Both players had beautiful goals but only one came up slightly on top. Anthony Pagano takes away this week's award and is the 2nd veteran to bring it home this season. It was #19 who delivered one of his signature free kicks at the 30' minute mark to the 1st half, Andrea Pirlo could learn a few tips from Pagano. Although he screamed with joy even before the ball hit the upper 90, Pagano helped the WFC regain the lead against the Benders and helped gang green regain 1st place within their division!

Oct.7th 2007 Smith Field

 VS. Hoboken SC (1-2 L)

When big men make big plays, they deserve big pictures! With the given history of 2006 League Cup match vs Hoboken SC, it only seems fitting that Nate Lockard comes away with the Player of the Week award. Nate elevated his game and exercised revenge on a Hoboken Team that he “butted heads” with only a year earlier.  This year, Nate headed something else - The Ball - into the goal. It was his goal that kept the wildcats breathing for hope to get another one in the late minutes of the game. With a history of throwing red cards, being eaten alive by fence monsters at Montclair, being head butted, veteran Lockard has seen it all. Under this game he remained calm and composed on the defensive end, and iced a header into goal for the Cats only tally. Lockard is the 1st Veteran player to win the award this year.

Sept.30th 2007 Smith Field

VS. Startime (1-1 D)

In a game with fouls and cards being thrown out like rice at a wedding, this week's "player of the week" kept his composure and hard work throughout the madness. Paul Kitson not only showed that he was there to play against Startime, but ended the game with the only goal and saved the WFC from a possible 1-0 defeat. The 3rd rookie to walk away with the award, everyone is impressed with the new players commitment, hard work, and talent. From the beginning whistle to the end of the game, Kitson hustled to get it done and is deserving of this week's award. A great goal from a run down the right corner helped make all of his hard work payoff.

Sept.23rd 2007 Valley National Bank

VS. Ramsey Rangers (4-2 W)

Clay Smith is Awarded the trophy for this week as he ended up scoring the game winner against the Ramsey Rangers. With the score tied 2-2 in the 2nd half, the ball was knocked from the midfield into the Rangers defensive 18 yard box. As players ran onto the incoming cross, Clay charged and ended up with the ball at his feet. A few touches to goal that ended with a shot, Clay scored with placement into the right netting. Throughout the game, Clay was heavily involved with the offensive possession. The Wildcats' rookies have been great new sparks for the team.

Sept.16th 2007 Smith Field

VS. Kappa Real Wyckoff2 (0-0 D)

Player of the week goes to James Polles as he stepped in at the sweeper position. In his first match for the Wildcats FC (which was against a very talented Kappa Real Wyckoff2 team), he helped lead the team to its first shutout of the 2007-2008 season. James took leadership as the last man back making sure everyone was on the same page. As an end result, and with the help of the whole WFC Defense, the club was able to salvage a draw.
